The elephant, with the motto Elephas Indus culices non timet (The Indian Elephant does not fear mosquitoes - Pliny), was a device of the Malatesta family. In October 1450 Sigismondo had twenty-two of these medals set into the backs of the marble elephants in the chapel of San Sigismondo in the Malatesta Temple in Rimini.

It also refers to the motto of the Malatesta family: Elephas indus culices non timet (the Indian elephant is not afraid of insects). This medal is derived from Matteo's original model, but lacks the artist's signature on the reverse.

Crowning the tympanum of the portal is the elephant, emblem of the Malatesta family, with the motto "Elephas Indus culices non timet" (The elephant fears not the culidae - a genus of the mosquito), whilst to the sides of the architrave and on the pilaster capitals there are the heraldic coats of arms showing the pícket fence, three heads.

Underneath the elephant is a short Latin phrase, "Elephas Indus culices non timet" which means "The Indian elephant is not afraid of mosquitoes". Mosquitoes refers to the enemies of the Malatesta Family, haughtily regarded as annoying insects.

Elephas indus culices non schedul ( lit. „Elefantul indian nu se teme de țânțari") a fost deviza lui Domenico Malatesta (1417 - 1468) și este găsit sculptat sau gravat în mai multe locuri în Biblioteca Malatesta din Cesena. Expresia indică faptul că celor puternici nu le pasă de răutatea și meschinarea tipice celor slabi și a fost adesea folosită în istorie pentru a explica.
