Buildings The ruins of Brampton Bryan Castle are on a floodplain south of the River Teme, 50 metres (160 ft) north of the church. From this site the castle guarded an important route from Ludlow along the Teme Valley to Knighton and on into Central Wales.

Brampton Bryan Hall History. This beautiful, still privately owned, house sits close to the Shropshire border, and was built in 1660 at the end of the Civil War after the destruction of Brampton Bryan Castle. In the mid 18th century it was much enlarged and renovated, and the owners have kept the building in excellent condition, indeed it was.

It is probably Sir Brian de Brampton the first, who died in around 1179, who built the stone castle. No written records exist of the exact date. It is one of the many castles that are positioned along the Welsh border and which were used to prevent Welsh marauders and raiding parties. This castle guarded the important route from Ludlow to Knighton.

In the spring of 1644, Brampton Bryan Castle was besieged a second time and finally fell to the Royalists. The castle was "reduced" (a term meaning, destroyed so as not to be capable of defence again) but the lives of the defenders were spared and the fame of Brilliana Harley spread, earning her the "admiration and applause even of her.
